What does the age verification law say?

The law was passed on June 4, 2024. Its full title is "Law on Amendments to the Law on Tobacco Products, the Law on Electronic Cigarettes, and the Law on the Prohibition of Selling Tobacco and Alcohol to Persons Under 18."

It is part of a plan to reduce the underage consumption of tobacco, nicotine, and alcohol.

How does the law affect online alcohol sales?

The law requires online retailers of alcoholic beverages to implement a digital age verification system.

This system must ensure that the customer is at least 16 years old for alcoholic beverages with an alcohol content of 1.2% to 16%, and 18 years old for alcoholic beverages with an alcohol content of 16% or higher at the time of purchase. This aligns online alcohol sales with in-store sales, where age verification is performed by the seller.

What does the law mean for online retailers of tobacco?

The law requires all online retailers of tobacco, tobacco substitutes, and herbal smoking products to implement a digital age verification system.

This system must ensure that the customer is at least 18 years old at the time of purchase. This aligns online tobacco sales with in-store sales, where age verification is performed by the seller.

An age verification system is an IT system that electronically verifies the consumer’s age in accordance with the established age limits.
