From October 1, 2024, any online business that sells alcohol and tobacco in Denmark must verify customers' ages. Previously, customers only needed to tick a box to self-report their age without having to verify it. The law makes digital age verification as secure as in physical stores, where a cashier can request a valid ID.

What does the age verification law say?

The law was passed on June 4, 2024. Its full title is "Law on Amendments to the Law on Tobacco Products, the Law on Electronic Cigarettes, and the Law on the Prohibition of Selling Tobacco and Alcohol to Persons Under 18."

It is part of a plan to reduce the underage consumption of tobacco, nicotine, and alcohol.

How does Danish law affect online sales of alcohol and tobacco?

The law requires online retailers to implement a digital age verification systes to ensure customers are either 16 years old (for beverages with alcohol content between 1.2% and 16%) or 18 years old (for beverages above 16% alcohol content, tobacco, tobacco substitutes, and herbal smoking products).

This aligns online sales with existing in-store age verification requirements. 

What is an age verification system?

It's any IT system that can electronically verify the customer's age in accordance with established age limits.
